Beyond Freedom Part 3 – 03: Role Models

Brent Payne August 22, 2024

These are people who capture our imagination because they are succeeding at levels we can only dream about. They have money. They have fame. But, more importantly, they give us reassurance and living proof that greatness can be accomplished. They are role models.

People seldom improve when they have no other model but themselves to copy.

– Oliver Goldsmith

EXERCISE

Identify five role models and write down the specific qualities they possess which you admire. List how their strengths could assist you. Put one of your role models in a situation you are facing. Ask yourself how this person would solve your issue or problem.

Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.

  • Mark Twain

Make a composite of role models from those you have identified. Pick and choose the best and most appropriate qualities of these people you admire and merge them into your dream role model. Imagine yourself with all of their best qualities.

Think of role models as a springboard. Why retrace steps? Why remap territory that has already been charted? Allow the example of your role models to bring you to the brink of what has already been achieved. Study them. Look for ideas that jump out at you. List the concepts and practices that resonate. Develop an understanding of the rules that your role models followed to success. Then, look for a jumping-off point, a way to break the rules. Don’t be afraid to dive in.

Leaps and advances occur only when you consider that which has not already been considered. So, look carefully at the path traveled by your role models. Then, venture in your own direction. Get in touch with your own creativity and put your own spin on their methods of success.

There is a difference between imitating a good man and counterfeiting him.

  • Benjamin Franklin

Finding your unique path is the best approach to achieving personal satisfaction. Getting in touch with your creativity is like turning on a flashlight in the dark. Creativity can help you locate your path.
