Change Your Reality

CHAPTER 04

CHANGE YOUR REALITY

If we want to change something, it is nice to know what we are altering. So let’s get real about reality. What is it exactly?

Dictionaries call it “the state of things as they actually exist.”

There is however much more to it than that. We all interpret reality differently. Your reality can be quite different from mine.

German philosophers have coined a term for that, Phenomenological Reality, the subjective elements and selective interpretation of events as seen through the eyes of a given individual. In other words, what you insist “actually exists” may be true and still be very different from my existence.

Our reality is derived from the interaction of our consciousness with the physical worldas we perceive it. To know how to alter our reality it’s helpful to determine how it’s being perceived.

What are some of the common occurrences you notice in your day to day?

Examples may be:

  •  It is hard to meet new friends.
  • People listen and respect your opinion.
  • Holding down a job has been a challenge.
  • Nothing ever comes easy, I have to earn everything I get.

Also factor in those annoying or pleasing tendencies you experience in life. Examples of reoccurring themes:

  • Do people seem to often cut in front of you while you are standing in line? Do they then get service ahead of you?
  • Do you get more than your share of speeding tickets?”
  • Always seem to end up at a restaurant’s preferred table by the window
  • Do you regularly seek and find deals?

These are the type of frequent events people associate with the way “life treats us.” They are little triggers that tip us off to the energy we are bringing into our existence. They help us define our reality.

It could be that you are very fortunate. Perhaps it is hard for you to hold onto money. People don’t take you seriously. You easily find yourself in positions of power. You always get what you need, but never more. You attract the wrong type of guy or girl.

If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. — Maya Angelou

List ten qualities of your reality. Don’t make descriptions of yourself. Instead detail the ways you interface with the rest of the world.

Next attempt to remember the first time you were aware of that type of occurrence. It might be as far back as you can remember, on the grammar school playground or in the middle of a family dynamic.

Spend some time contemplating and writing about it in your journal.

Hunt for hidden beliefs. Start to scrutinize the basic tenets you just know to be true. Look for connections between unwanted events and your belief system. In subsequent chapters we will direct you on methods to reprogram those beliefs but for now you are a detective uncovering your clues to the beliefs that are creating both positive and negative results.

Understanding and challenging our belief system is an enormous task. But by first identifying how our deep-seated beliefs are always working to confirm themselves in the reality we experience, we can begin to redirect our perceived consciousness in a healthy and positive manner.
