CHAPTER 11
PUT YOUR PLAN INTO ACTION
If you were an author capable of rewriting your life story, where would you begin? Let’s suggest it begins right now. Because you are about to spring into action.
Setting a goal is like taking a road trip. You select a destination. Figure out when you want to arrive.
Make the necessary arrangements to support the trip. Gas up the tank. And then comes the most important part. You get in the car, start the engine, back down the driveway and GO! You takeaction. The journey is where all the good stuff happens. So many of us are always preparing to go but never get in gear.
It is only the first step when you choose a purpose. Step number two is taking sustained actions in support of your purpose. Believe it or not, this is where most of us fall down. Ever been to a doctor or health care professional and noticed they look really unhealthy? More than ever we are an informed society. Advice abounds from every corner. We have the internet at our fingertips and self help is a twenty billion dollar business. Still there is a cavernous gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it.
Between saying and doing many a pair of shoes is worn out. —Italian Proverb
The link between “understanding and desire” to “action and result” all boils down to one thing… getting started.
And once you do begin, keep the momentum going. Starting and stopping not only demolishes your resolve, it goes against the laws of nature.
Granted change is uncomfortable. But it is more than that. Maybe this next sentence helps to explain:
The innate force of matter is a power of resisting, by which every body endeavors to preserve in its present state, whether it be of rest, or of moving uniformly forward in a straight line.
That was written by Sir Isaac Newton describing his first law of physics. It is commonly known as inertia. And by “everybody” Newton is referring not just to you and I, but every particle of mass in the universe.
If a man would move the world, he must first move himself. —Socrates
And here comes the beautiful part! I’m roughly paraphrasing Newton here. He says that once the ball is rolling, it keeps on rolling unless forces come along to resist its forward movement.
In other words, once you start on the road towards your goal you build momentum and it actually becomes easier to reach your goal than it does to stop yourself from accomplishment.
Promises to ourselves are always the ones which are most important to honor. We damage our self-esteem by breaking our word to ourselves. We lose trust. We question our commitment. So let’s get build a foundation.
Giving up the known pleasure for the distant and unknown desire takes faith and commitment. Foregoing the present delight in order to achieve something great has helped forge the careers of many of our most successful men and women.
So we are going to make a promise to ourselves and then keep it. Write on a piece of paper one known pleasure that is in conflict with your newly stated Amplitude Goals. Make a commitment to avoid that temptation for one month. Write it on a piece of paper, put it in an envelope and mail it to yourself. In one month, when you open that envelope, that little piece of paper will feel like a trophy!
