CHAPTER 10
VISUALIZATION
Â
Seeing is believing. Even if it exists only in your mind!
That is the principle behind visualization. One of the most powerful built-in tools we possess.
Our brains love to see. An enormous percentage of the brain is devoted to visual processing. And visualization has a proven track record. Literally. For years track and field athletes have been watching and feeling themselves run the race in their heads before they ever set foot in the starting blocks. Entire coaching industries have been built around pre-visualization because it works .
But you don’t have to be fleet of foot to derive real benefits from visualization. It is an extremely effective method of jump-starting us toward our goals. And it’s kind of fun.
Visualization is a trick of the imagination that transports us anywhere: in the cockpit of a race car about to start the Indy 500, acting in an emotional scene opposite your favorite movie star, soaring off a cliff in a hang glider. Its power is best utilized for bringing about those goals, adventures and occupations we truly hold dear.
A visualization becomes most effective when we fully immerse ourselves. Feel as if it’s actually taking place in the present tense. Observe the experience and emotionally react to the vision. You are not dreaming, or hoping. You are conjuring a visual experience inside your head, that’s every bit as vital and authentic as the actual experience. And when your visualization comes true, you won’t be surprised. It feels like you’ve already lived it.
I would visualize things coming to me. It would just make me feel better. Visualization works if you work hard. That’s the thing. You can’t just visualize and go eat a sandwich. — Jim Carrey
Want to join the fun? Here’s how it’s done.
Sit in a comfortable place with low light that is quiet. Clothes your eyes, breathe deeply and say the phrase “I am at one with the world.” Repeat the phrase twenty times. Feel the meaning in the words. This is the perfect warm-up exercise for your visualization. Now allow your mind to settle and follow these steps:
1. Determine your visualization. Go where your mind takes you.
2. Relax and concentrate. Be observant of your mind’s image. Notice the vibrancy of the colors. In your mind turn left and right and see what surrounds you.
3. Envelop yourself in the imagined reality you are creating. Engage in the activity, feel it as if you are in real time. Don’t allow your mind to wander. But spend the next several minutes in the movie inside your mind.
Include your emotions and senses. Feel the exhilaration! Cry a tear of happiness. Take in the aroma. Hear the applause.
The last step is what really lights up a visualization. By engaging all your senses and letting your feelings fly, you’ll transform a mental exercise into an undeniable experience. Imagine a movie with no music, no sound effects and actors that blankly mouthed their lines. You’d want your money back. Be the star of your visualizations! Dance on a big stage! Perform a showstopper!
Visualization is the cosmic link between your goal and reality.
The crucial aspect is repetition. Your visualizations can seem like sweet daydreams or they can be powerful forces that bridge the gap between you and your goals. Make them a vibrant part of your daily ritual without exception and the movie in your mind may soon become the life you lead.
